Stewards of the Lake at
Bugondo Landing Site

Stewards of the Lake is a community-led initiative at Bugondo Landing Site, Serere District, coordinated by Ateker Museum. Running from July 2026 – March 2028, the project empowers fishing communities to protect Lake Kyoga’s environment, preserve cultural heritage, and develop sustainable eco-tourism opportunities.
Heritage Preservation and
Documentation

We collect, conserve, document and interpret Ateker tangible and intangible heritage, including cultural knowledge, oral traditions and practices. Through research, community participation and documentation, we contribute to the preservation of knowledge for present and future generations.
Education, Research and
Cultural Learning

The Museum creates opportunities for students, researchers, visitors and communities to learn through heritage. Our programs include museum tours, cultural classes, storytelling, cultural teachings, exhibitions, quizzes and cultural experiences designed to make heritage accessible and relevant.
Cultural Tourism and
Experiences

Ateker Museum offers visitors opportunities to encounter Ateker heritage through guided tours, exhibitions, storytelling, performances, Cultural Nights, photography, cultural products and outdoor cultural experiences. Our growing tourism program also includes camping and other experiences that connect culture with the natural environment.
Youth and Women
Empowerment

We use culture as a platform for skills development, leadership and economic empowerment. Through cultural enterprise, training and community programmes, young people and women are supported to transform cultural knowledge and creativity into skills, products, opportunities and livelihoods.
Peace, Social Cohesion and
Dialogue

Culture provides a powerful space for people to understand one another, confront difficult histories and imagine shared futures. Ateker Museum uses dialogue, cultural participation and youth engagement to contribute to peacebuilding and social cohesion, particularly across Teso and Karamoja and through wider regional networks. Our work includes the Teso–Karamoja Youth Peace Dialogue, youth leadership and peace fellowship activities, Youth In Action engagements and initiatives supporting meaningful youth participation in peace processes. .
Our Partners
Ateker Museum believes meaningful cultural work is strengthened through collaboration. We work with and engage cultural institutions, civil society organisations, international networks, media organisations, development actors and other partners working across heritage, community development, peace and innovation.
